Bergamot

Citrus aurantium ssp. bergamia Essential Oil

Bergamot Essential Oil is used for depression, insomnia and anxiety, the fruity-floral scent is both calming and balancing. Bergamot is antiseptic, antifungal, and antiviral, making it helpful for eczema, cold & flu, herpes, indigestion, acne, and oily skin. Blends well with grapefruit, lavender, jasmine and rose.

Bergamot is named after Bergamo, the Italian city in Lombardy where it was first brought to market as an aid in reducing fever. The essential oil of Bergamot comes from the peel of a small fruit similar to an orange as it is picked shortly before ripeness. You might be familiar with bergamot from it's association with Earl Grey tea. Bergamot essential oil is sprayed on blended teas to provide an uplifting citrus aroma.

Because citrus oils are cold-pressed from the fresh peel, it’s important to choose only organic. Simplers certified organic citrus oils insure the highest purity and therapeutic benefit, free of any pesticides or adulterants.

Anti-addiction blend: 3 parts marjoram (sweet), 2 parts bergamot, 1 part clary sage. Carry around to smell as needed during detox from smoking, drug use, or while trying to quit unwanted habits.

Cystitis (bladder infection): add 3-5 drops of bergamot to a bath or sitz bath at least once a day.

Facial steam: add 10 drops total of bergamot and any other desired facial oils (such as geranium, lavender, ylang ylang) to a pot of hot water, cover head and bowl with a towel, close eyes, and enjoy for 5-10 minutes (taking a fresh breath of air every minute or two). Best done in the evening to avoid exposure to sunlight afterward (see caution below).

Caution: All citrus oils are potential skin irritants. Because citrus oils can be photosensitizing, avoid lengthy exposure to direct sunlight immediately after application. To be safe use a 2% - 5% dilution (10 to 30 drops per ounce of carrier oil) with citrus essential oils for skin application or avoid direct sunlight for at least four hours.

Add Bergamot to any room diffuser for a fresh citrus aroma. Before any bath or skin application, Bergamot Essential Oil should always be diluted. Dilute Bergamot essential oil to 2% - 5% before any direct skin application and wait four hours before exposure to sunlight. According to Gabriel Mojay, the calming effect of bergamot is helpful in controlling anxiety and mood swings.
