Unsure which essential oils or carrier oils to use? Use the guide below!

Selecting a Carrier Oil

Because essential oils are so concentrated, it is important to blend them with a carrier oil whenever they are used topically. Carrier oils help spread the essential oils out over a greater surface area, preventing possible skin irritation. Carrier oils also contain many nutrients themselves, and can even help increase the absorption of essential oils by:

  • Lubricating skin layers (hydrated skin = better absorption)
  • Slowing down the evaporation of essential oils
  • The act of massaging them in increases circulation to the area

Any fat-based oil (olive, sesame, coconut, etc) can be used as a carrier oil in aromatherapy. However, when crafting a blend for the delicate skin of the face, it's best to use an organic, premium carrier oil like Argan Oil, Jojoba Oil, Macadamia Oil, Rosehip Seed Oil, or Tamanu Oil. All of these premium oils are soothing and nutritive, but some are uniquely suited to different skin types.

  • Argan Oil: Rich in vitamin E and antioxidants. May improve the appearance of mature, dry, hyperreactive/sensitive, and sun-damaged skin. Hair & scalp care, brittle nails, dry cuticles.
  • Jojoba Oil: Balancing for most skin types. Has very little scent. Body oils and massage, hair & scalp care.
  • Macadamia Oil: Rich in palmitoleic acid; rejuvenating for mature skin. May improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, environmental stress. Dry hair/scalp.
  • Rosehip Seed Oil: Rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants. May improve the appearance of mature and hyperreactive skin, fine lines and wrinkles, scars. Dry hair/scalp.
  • Tamanu Oil: Ultra-soothing and protective. Overactive/oily skin, hyperreactive and sensitive skin. May improve the appearance of scars and stretch marks.
